One day, Pinguin sat on the patio and drank coffee.
From his little table he could see the street sloping down toward the harbor. Usually, by late afternoon, he could spot the ferry moving back and forth like a patient white duck on the water. But today the harbor had almost disappeared. Fog rolled in between the houses, soft and gray, and the first lamps along the road glowed like tiny yellow buttons.
Pinguin leaned forward. “The light festival starts at dusk,” he said to himself. “If the fog gets thicker, the ferry might be late. I know what to do.”
As soon as he had the idea, he stood up, buttoned his raincoat, and hurried off to Teddy’s house with quick, eager steps.
At Teddy’s door, Pinguin reached up and rang the bell exactly the way he always did: “ding-dong-ding-dong-ding-dong-ding-dong-diiiiiing-doong”.
Inside, paws shuffled across the floor. The door opened, and Teddy smiled from the warm hallway.
“Pinguin, is that you?”
“It is!” said Pinguin. “The fog is marching into the harbor, and I think the ferry may be delayed. The festival starts soon. We need a plan.”
Teddy nodded at once. “Then let’s make one in the garage.”
Teddy’s garage was the kind of place that made Pinguin feel cheerful right away. Shelves held jars of screws and nails, hooks held brushes and ropes, and in the workshop shed beside it stood a workbench smooth from years of useful jobs. Teddy spread a harbor map on the bench and checked the ferry timetable pinned beside a calendar with a picture of seagulls.
“Best idea,” Teddy said, “is to go early and be ready for another route.”
Together they gathered what they might need: a sturdy handcart, two bright lanterns, a small bell for signaling in the fog, a thermos of cocoa, and a trolley umbrella cover to keep things dry. Teddy folded the map neatly and tucked it into the cart.
“I can carry the lanterns, the bell, the thermos, the cover, and the map,” said Pinguin.
He tried.
The lantern handles slipped over one flipper, the bell dangled from the other, the thermos bumped his side, and the umbrella cover slid down over his shoulder. Pinguin took one determined step and then wobbled in place without getting anywhere at all.
Teddy looked at him kindly. “Very impressive,” he said. “You have become a one-bird supply cupboard.”
Pinguin puffed. “I felt efficient for a moment.”
Teddy calmly lifted the thermos and map into the cart. “And now you can also move.”
That worked much better.
