One day, Pinguin sat on the patio and drank coffee.
The morning was quiet and bright. A little breeze moved the bean plants in his garden boxes, and the wooden treehouse at the back of the yard stood ready for story night later that evening. Pinguin smiled at the thought of cushions, books, and cocoa. Then he glanced up at the treehouse window.
Blink.
Blink-blink.
The reading lamp was flickering in the middle of the daylight, as if it could not decide whether to wake up or go back to sleep.
Pinguin set down his cup. “Aha,” he said. “If the lamp is doing that now, story night will be terribly wiggly.” Then an idea popped into his head, quick and shiny. He would not cancel anything. He would go to Teddy.
He hurried next door, trotting down the garden path and up to Teddy’s tidy front step. Pinguin reached up and rang the bell: "ding-dong-ding-dong-ding-dong-ding-dong-diiiiiing-doong".
Inside, tools clinked, a drawer slid shut, and the door opened. Teddy smiled from the hallway and said, "Pinguin, is that you?"
“Yes,” said Pinguin, nearly bouncing. “The treehouse reading lamp is flickering, and story night is tonight. Can we repair it?”
“We certainly can have a proper look,” said Teddy. “Come into the workshop.”
Teddy’s garage was a wonderful place. Shelves held bulbs, wire, plugs, and small boxes with neat labels. There were screwdrivers in a rack, a step stool by the wall, a test lamp on the bench, and a toolbox with compartments full of useful parts. Everything looked ready to help.
Teddy rubbed his chin. “We’ll check it from the simplest cause to the trickiest cause. First bulb, then plug, then cord, then switch, then socket.”
Pinguin nodded fast. “I can be assistant mechanic.”
“You are hired,” said Teddy.
They packed a small toolbox, a new bulb, and an extension lamp, then walked to the backyard treehouse. Inside, the little room looked as cozy as ever: blankets folded in a basket, picture books stacked by the reading chair, and a striped cushion leaning against the wall. The reading lamp gave another silly blink.
“It looks sleepy,” said Pinguin.
“It looks stubborn,” said Teddy.
Teddy set the step stool firmly under the lamp and unscrewed the bulb while Pinguin held the old one carefully in both flippers. In went the new bulb. For one shining second, the lamp glowed clear and warm.
Then it flickered again.
Pinguin looked up. “Well. That was a short victory.”
